Thirty five Poway Unified School District bus drivers were scheduled to receive hand-delivered layoff notices recently, according to school officials, though they will continue as employees at least through Aug. 5 — and possibly longer.

School bus drivers also continue to have all job benefits. School officials, facing the need to balance its next budget by using millions of reserves, expect to know by Aug. 5 if the notices can be recinded.

PUSD is asking parents who rely on regular education bus service to save the transportation program by paying an increased annual fare ($575, compared to the previous $439 annually) by Aug. 1 (with the option of making a half payment then, and another payment by Nov. 1).

Bus service for special needs students is not affected.
