Westview JROTC Honored; Flowers Cadet of the Year
More than 25 civic and veteran organizations presented awards to Westview Navy JROTC cadets during the unit’s annual awards ceremony at the Westview Theatre.
“We are so honored to have these organizations come to our ceremony and present awards and medals to our hard working cadets,” said CDR Rick Jordan, USN (ret), the unit’s Naval Science Instructor. “Each year I try and get a new award for one of our cadets and this year the Vietnam Veterans Association presented an award for the first time.”
Cadet Christian Flowers, in addition to receiving the Surface Navy Association Award, received the Navy League’s Award as Cadet of the Year, and Cadet Clare Chapman was awarded the “Bravo Zulu” Award as the Top Freshman Cadet. Cadet Christian Noel assumed command of the unit for 1st Term of school year 2011-12 in a “Change of Command” ceremony where he relieved the outgoing Commanding Officer, Cadet CDR Nathan Wilson. Cadet Flo Bullar assumed the Executive Officer position and will assume Command 2nd Term.
Another noteworthy event was the awarding of the “Big Check” worth up to $180,000 from the Navy NROTC Scholarship coordinators to two cadets, Cadet Wilson and Cadet LT Allison Adamos. Wilson will attend Arizona State University, and Adamos will attend the University of San Diego. Cadet CDR Connor Oberrick received a Marine Corp Option ROTC Scholarship to Washington University, and Cadet LCDR Dean Schevker was awarded an Army ROTC Scholarship to Wentworth Military Academy.
The unit also was awarded “Distinguished Unit” as one of the top NJROTC units in Southern California. Of the 632 NJROTC units nationwide, Westview was one of only three that qualified for Nationals in both Drill and Marksmanship.
“Each year I am told by the awards presenters that our cadets look sharper than any other unit so all our hard work, effort and attention to detail pays off,” said Jordan. “We definitely had our best year ever and with the quality of cadets we have returning we’re set up well for another super year next year.”
Nearly 150 parents and guests were present for the ceremony, which was capped off by a reception in the JROTC classroom. Westview Navy JROTC is available to any high school student in the Poway Unified School District. Jordan can be contacted at 858-780-2000, ext. 3238 or by email at email@example.com
