Mary Esteban’s life of volunteerism began with Rancho Peñasquitos sports teams and has matured into the Canyon View Elementary PTA President.

Mary, her husband Eddie, and sons Michael, Nicholas and EJ have lived in Rancho Peñasquitos since 1993. They chose the neighborhood after looking for an excellent school district and the feeling of a close-knit community. Mary and Eddie started helping with Little League, where Eddie was Chief Umpire and Mary had roles as supporting Chair, Player Agent and Auxiliary President. They also volunteered for PQYSA (soccer) and the basketball leagues as well.

Before she entered this stage of her life, Mary was working as a Vice President and Commercial Lender with Union Bank, when she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. After realizing she couldn’t continue at her job, Mary became a stay-at-home-mom. “It just goes to show you that everyone has their own cross to bear but you can still find something in yourself to give to others,” she said.

Although she was always a PTA member, Mary needed

a “push” to run for office. “Great friends that I met through RPLL encouraged me to run for PTA Treasurer, and the rest, as they say, is history!” said Mary. With her oldest two boys grown up and in the workplace, it’s fifth grader, EJ, who has brought Mary for a “second time around” with the Poway school district. As PTA President, Mary loves the job because she sees first-hand the benefit for students. “Especially during these difficult economic times, PTA has played a tremendous role by funding music, art and physical education instruction, library books and free family fun night activities,” said Mary.

In their quest for 100% parent participation this year, the PTA membership theme is “The Magic of Membership.” Each family will be asked for one hour of their time to “feel the magic!” Parents who work full-time can help too. Program coordination and fundraising can be done in the evenings or weekends. “I have learned that even working parents have an opportunity to share in their children’s educational experience,” said Mary. There are still many events at Canyon View that need an extra set of hands, so help Mary make this an exceptional year for everyone.
