Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation Arts in Education Initiative Introduction to Instruments 2013
The first of six Poway Center for the Performing Arts (POW!) Foundation’s 2013 Introduction to Instruments assemblies took place on Friday, May 16 at Poway Center for the Performing Arts. The Poway High School Wind Symphony, with select string players introducing violins, cellos and other stringed instruments, performed for more than 560 enthusiastic students from Midland, Tierra Bonita, Garden Road, Painted Rock, Valley and Chaparral Elementary Schools. The next Introduction to Instruments performances will take place at Westview High School on May 24, Del Norte High School on May 31and Mt. Carmel High School on June 6. Designed to encourage 4th grade students to participate in the Poway Unified School District’s 5th grade music education program, Introduction to Instruments reaches more than 2400 fourth grade students in the district through large-scale assemblies at the participating high school performing arts venue. Introduction to Instruments assemblies are underwritten by the Phillip and Shauna Schneider Family Fund and POW! Foundation supporters.
The POW Foundation has offered Introduction to Instruments to every fourth grade classroom in the Poway Unified School District for the past 12 years. Educators affirm that the program is vital to the health of the school band program and the Pow! Foundation supporters are proud to play a role in developing young Artists and Arts Lovers in our community as well as the educators who work diligently to make this program a success – for keeping the Arts alive in our schools.
Under the direction of the High School band directors Mike Cook (Poway), Jennifer Kitelinger (Del Norte), Jerri Webb (Westview) and Garry McPherson (Mt. Carmel), an educational as well as engaging concert will be performed by exceptional high school musicians. The young concert-goers will get the full impact of a staged concert in addition to being introduced to various woodwind, brass and string instrument groups. The music selected may range from classical to contemporary, sometimes with an added dash of humor and theatrics to thrill the enthusiastic fourth grade students.
Westview High School band performs a program titled “We Will Rock You” for Adobe Bluffs, Park Village, Sundance, Canyon View and Deer Canyon Elementary Schools. The Westview program will be performed for the public on May 23 and 24. For tickets and more information about the evening performances visit www.westviewgold.org. Del Norte High School will present to students from Monterey Ridge, Del Sur, Willow Grove, and Stone Ranch. The final presentation will take place at Mt. Carmel High School where the Wind Ensemble band members will introduce the instruments through recognizable Main Themes of Movies for Morning Creek, Los Peñasquitos, Rolling Hills and Sunset Hill Elementary Schools classes.
