San Diego’s Young Musicians Perform Winter Concerts at Copley Symphony Hall
San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory (SDYS) presents two inspiring concerts from their talented young musicians on Feb. 15 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. at Copley Symphony Hall, Jacobs Music Center.
These Winter Concerts feature SDYS’ advanced and intermediate orchestras. The performance is a culmination of the students’ hard work from the first half of the season, with a diverse repertoire by some of the world’s greatest composers. This year’s repertoire includes Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 by D, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 and Bartok’s Viola Concerto with Concerto Competition Winner and 92129 resident, Andrea Fortier on viola. Enjoy the experience of the young SDYS musicians bringing their skill and passion to the stage, creating a delightful and fresh musical experience.
These concerts are the perfect opportunity for any young musicians interested in enrolling in SDYS to see the different levels of ensembles in action.
SDYS’ 2014-15 auditions registration for new students begins Apr. 1. Young musicians can experience how it feels to sit in the orchestra at the SDYS Rehearsals Open Day on March 29 and 30. To find out more about the Balboa Park Programs, prospective students can join the SDYS interest list at www.sdys.org, to be emailed information, or call 619.233.3232.

About San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory
The San Diego Youth Symphony and Conservatory (SDYS) is the 6th oldest continuously operating youth symphony in the United States, and serves over 600 students annually in eleven ensembles from its home in Balboa Park. Skill levels range from beginner to pre-professional, with participating students ages 8 to 25. Concerts are performed throughout the region including at world-class venues such as Jacobs Music Center (formerly Copley Symphony Hall) and California Center for the Arts in Escondido. Each summer SDYS co-hosts the International Youth Symphony with Rotary International Youth Exchange which brings SDYS’ most talented young musicians with accomplished student musicians from around the world for two weeks of music and friend making.
In addition to its Balboa Park programs, SDYS launched the Community Opus Project in 2010 as a strategy to demonstrate the many benefits of music education, build support for music in the community, and convince school districts to provide music as part of students’ regular curriculum. It was so successful that within only three years, the Chula Vista Elementary School District committed to providing music education to all of its students and with the assistance of SDYS has begun to phase in school day music.
