A PQ Icon

“My father and brother owned 7-Eleven’s and I learned a lot about business from them,” recalled Martin Steele, owner of PQ’s well-known sports pub, The Deli Stop. Martin’s knowledge in business, coupled with his education in advertising and arts, and his passion for sports, is what led him to start The Deli Stop in 1987. Today the eatery, which is still at its original location in Rancho Peñasquitos Town Center, has been named Best Deli of the Year by San Diego Weekly Magazine, and has even been called a PQ icon.

Over the years, Martin has formed a strong connection to the community. “I have met so many wonderful PQ residents over the years and I will never forget the loyal support and friendships I have made,” said Martin. His ties to 92129 have encouraged him to give back – taking part in “hundreds” of fundraisers for schools, sport teams, and local charities. “It has been my privilege to do whatever I can to give back to a community that has given so much to my family and me,” noted Martin.

Having been involved with the Rancho Peñasquitos Little League since 1997 as manager, coach, and chief umpire, Martin has received recognition from the local baseball community. “I was the umpire in chief for over ten years and now I oversee the Juniors Division, umpiring, scheduling, and more,” explained Martin. “I am also a District 32 umpire working tournament games and all-star games.”

When he isn’t busy running The Deli Stop or volunteering, Martin enjoys fantasy football and baseball, and taking small vacations with his wife of twenty-four years, Sandy, and their two sons, Austin (age 21) and Dylan (age 18). He also loves music. “My oldest son Austin’s band Supergroupie was signed to a local record label and that keeps me entertained,” said Martin.

As for his future plans for The Deli Stop, Martin replied, “[I’m] just keeping my business up to date and always striving to improve. I just signed a new lease and will take life day by day.”
