Five local teachers were named San Diego County Teachers of the Year at “Cox Presents: A Salute to Teachers” presented by Ashford University in partnership with the San Diego County Office of Education. Over forty teachers were nominated for the honor out of a pool of approximately 26,000. Congratulations to this year’s Teachers of the Year John Berray, Mary Goins, Sara Matthews, Khamphet Pease, and Maria Teran-Cruz. The top ten Teacher of the Year finalists included Stephanie Martin and Crystal Ochoa from the Poway Unified School District. Highlights of the evening included creative dance performances by local schools, including Mt. Carmel High School, uplifting and educational speeches, personal teacher videos, and more. Since 1974, 151 teachers have been named San Diego County Teacher of the Year. Eighteen of those teachers went on to receive the California Teacher of the Year award, and three were named National Teacher of the Year.
