Inspiring Loving Acts

As a key leader and volunteer at Existence Church, Mikala Janse van Rensburg supports worthy causes. She coordinated an event to combat human trafficking in San Diego that allowed her to donate $12,000 to 10 local organizations, and this summer she plans to coordinate an XRun to X out human trafficking of children. As a guest speaker for San Diego mom groups, she teaches moms to give back to their communities in front of their children. Additionally, she coordinated an outreach project that provided 300 pairs of shoes, sweaters, and hygiene kits to the homeless for this past winter season.

Being a global citizen motivates and excites Mikala. Growing up in a poor rural Texas town taught her to be grateful for what she had and inspired her to help others in need. This past summer, she participated in a week-long mission trip to the Dominican Republic. She upgraded basketball courts and baseball fields, as well as building pulpits for surrounding churches that provided food and education for those in need. Her trip inspired her to give even more. She is currently coordinating an effort to sponsor children through Compassion International. The goal is to provide five long-term sponsorships to children from countries that are in desperate need of food, shelter, medical care, and education.

Inspired by wanting her own boys to become good people, Mikala began weeKIND. She hopes children demonstrating kindness will create a kinder future and a kindness generation. She’s coordinated play/serve dates, interactive kindness scavenger hunts, and 25 Days of Kindness. Children pass on a “weeKIND elf” with their act of kindness and request others pass it along with their next act of kindness. Toy, clothing, and money donations are welcome along with volunteers to plan events or advertise this movement via social media. Mikala exclaimed, “The more people involved the greater impact we can make!” Her movement helps parents raise their children to be compassionate, future leaders.

“Spending time with my family and doing good deeds together warms and fills my heart more than anything else in this world,” shared Mikala. Her husband, Wesley, also serves at her church and spends loving time with their boys. They’ve begun geocaching with a twist. They’ve hidden Kind Cache. They leave a nice note for someone and request the recipient leave another in turn. And because they have so much love to share, they are investigating fostering/adopting a child through Olive Crest.
