Local Star

x_localsoyouthink2Black Mountain Middle School (BMMS) sixth grader Emma Hellenkamp was named the third runner-up on Season 13 of So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation (SYTYCD) in September. Emma was selected as one of 100 dancers for SYTYCD at her audition in Chicago. The 100 dancers were then narrowed down to the top 10 before the show began airing in May. Emma stayed in L.A. during her time on the show, learning new choreography each week with her partner Gaby Diaz. “It was absolutely amazing to dance with her,” Emma said. “She taught me so much and was always so supportive of me. We became really close, like sisters.”

Emma has been dancing since she was two years old, studying a variety of styles including tap, jazz, ballet, hip hop, contemporary, and ballroom. She is the second born in a family with four girls – all of whom are dancers. The Hellenkamps have lived in 92129 for over 12 years; all of the girls attended Adobe Bluffs Elementary School and now Emma and her older sister Amanda attend BMMS. Though she didn’t win SYTYCD, Emma still describes the finale as “the most exciting moment ever!” She plans to keep in touch with all of her new friends from the show and get back in the dance studio to continue learning and improving as much as she can.
