Passion For Teaching
For Vicki Rehkopf, there is nothing more satisfying than making a difference in the lives of the students in her classroom. “Learning every day with my students inspires me. I want to make learning fun, to create an environment where children feel safe to explore and make mistakes, where they feel supported by both the teachers and each other and a place where they recognize each other for the unique individuals they are,” revealed Vicki. She has been teaching for 33 years and has taught preschool through each elementary grade level. She is currently teaching fourth and fifth grade at Country Montessori in Poway.
One of Vicki’s greatest passions is taking her students to Sunshine Care, an assisted living care facility. “The students spend time engaged in activities such as arts and crafts and singing. It is a wonderfully reciprocal experience. The children have an opportunity to show such compassion, and the seniors love the companionship. It’s a win-win monthly experience. I rarely come out of there with dry eyes,” stated Vicki. She also enjoys helping in the Sunday school classes at Peñasquitos Lutheran Church.
Animals are also dear to Vicki’s heart. She loves all species, even snakes and tarantulas. In fact, she admits that friends and colleagues will often call her to catch and relocate snakes. “I’m not afraid of any animals, and I’ll hold them all,” shared Vicki.
Vicki and her husband Buddy moved to Rancho Peñasquitos in 1985 as newlyweds. “It is a great place to raise a family and I love the community feel and the diverse population. My dear friends are here, and I enjoy watching the gorgeous sunsets and the hot air balloons floating towards our home,” related Vicki. She is a native San Diegan, although she lived in several different states during her childhood as her father was in the U.S. Navy. Vicki and Buddy have two sons: Joshua, an artist and art teacher who teaches alongside Vicki at Country Montessori; and Jason, a City of Los Angeles firefighter and paramedic. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends and can often be found exploring Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve and Hilltop Park, as well as taking walks along the coast.
