Grateful to Give Back

When the Foster-Kennedy family’s dog chased a kitten up a tree, Colleen Kennedy and the kids, Justin and Amanda, attempted to coax it down – but quickly noticed its large ears and stubby tail. “This wasn’t a kitty cat,” explained Colleen. “It was a baby bobcat! I hurried everyone inside fearing that the mama bobcat was no doubt nearby.” Colleen and husband Dave Foster enjoy PQ as much for its surrounding wildlife as they do for its schools and neighborhood. After all, it’s not every day you find a bobcat in your yard.

The family moved to the community in 2002 before Amanda was born, when Justin was a toddler. Dave is a senior IT engineer supporting TurboTax at Intuit. Colleen has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology/neuropsychology and writes reports part-time from home as she raises their children. They’re a very active family unit; Dave plays in an indoor volleyball league and plays beach volleyball and drums, while Colleen enjoys cooking, gardening, and painting with Amanda. Justin plays Westview High volleyball and in recreational basketball leagues with Amanda. In addition, Amanda is a girl scout and founded the Endangered Species Club, which hosts booths at the PQ Farmers Market to support the World Wildlife Fund. Justin also volunteered last summer as a junior camp counselor.

“As a family, we are very involved in giving back to our community,” shared Colleen. Through Kids Korps, the kids earned Presidential Service awards for their work with people with special needs, seniors, and families without homes. Dave coached Special Olympics for 20 years, and for 13 years volunteered at a camp for children with cancer. Colleen has been a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) with Voices for Children since 2008.

“Although we thoroughly enjoy technology, and the conveniences it brings to life, we have minimized its use for our children,” added Colleen. Ten years ago, the children became (mostly) technology-free during summers, except for emailing and family TV/movie nights. “We’ve found they spend more time reading, hanging out together and with friends, and finding creative things to do,” she added. The Foster-Kennedy family loves summer vacations, especially the Hawaiian Islands and Lassen Volcanic and Glacier National Parks. Home is here in PQ, where Colleen reflected, “It’s a neighbors-helping-neighbors type of community.”
