Taking the Stage
When Brandon Saldivar first began acting nearly five years ago, he knew that the stage was where he belonged. “In July 2012, I took a summer camp at San Diego Junior Theatre and instantly knew that acting would become a big part of my life. In addition to getting to play various characters, I love seeing the progression that is made in each production from the very first rehearsal to the final dress rehearsal,” revealed Brandon.
Located in Balboa Park at Casa del Prado, San Diego Junior Theatre is an independent, nonprofit organization and is the oldest continuing children’s theater program in the country. Over the years, Brandon has acted in many shows at San Diego Junior Theatre, including The Music Man, in which he played Marcellus Washburn. It was for this role that Brandon was nominated for a National Youth Theatre Award.
Brandon also acted in the 2013 and 2015 Old Globe productions of How the Grinch Stole Christmas. “It was an amazing experience playing Boo Who (2013) and Danny Who (2015). Working with professional actors was very inspirational. It didn’t feel like a job to me at all – I loved it!” exclaimed Brandon, who especially enjoys playing interesting and fun characters. In addition to San Diego Junior Theatre and the Old Globe, Brandon has also taken the stage at Teatro Mascara Magica, an organization dedicated to increasing multicultural theater here in San Diego.
A seventh grader at Black Mountain Middle School, Brandon enjoys singing as well, citing chorus as his favorite subject in school. He and his family have lived in Rancho Peñasquitos for four years and Brandon loves spending time out and about in the 92129 community. “I’m also very into video games. My older brother introduced me to playing video games, and I’m hooked,” stated Brandon.
“It is my goal to make it on Broadway someday.”
Looking to the future, Brandon hopes to attend USC or UCLA and major in theater. “It is my goal to make it on Broadway someday,” said this hardworking student and actor.
