Four members of Voices for Children’s (VFC) Real Word speakers panel spoke at the Rancho Peñasquitos Library in late January. The young women – all former foster youth – shared their experiences in the foster care system and how their Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) made a difference in their lives. The floor was also opened to questions from the audience, which ranged from existing CASA volunteers to individuals who have just begun to learn about VFC.

There are currently 10 individuals serving on the Real Word speakers panel, all of whom are trained and supervised by VFC. They have spoken both locally and nationally about life in the dependency system and the importance of CASAs, who advocate on their behalf in court, school, and the community. Real Word events provide an educational, eye-opening experience that both celebrate CASA volunteers and communicate the critical need for more volunteer advocates in San Diego County. Learn more at
