From Sports to Shakespeare, Shelley Porter Supports the Community’s Kids
Avid Reader, Active Mom
Sports and Shakespeare fill many hours of the week for Shelley Porter. Shelley is the library media technician at Sunset Hills Elementary School and the mother of three very athletic sons.
A Rancho Peñasquitos resident for the last decade, Shelley appreciates the sense of community that 92129 provides. “Growing up, I moved often, so I never felt terribly connected to any one place,” she shared. “I love that the same families I see in school are the ones my sons play with in their sports and I run into at the grocery store.”
In her role at the Sunset Hills library, Shelley enjoys working with every student and sharing her enthusiasm for reading. “There is nothing more satisfying than finding the perfect book for a reluctant reader,” she said. For the more advanced readers, Shelley works with the Shakespeare Reading Group, a group of fifth graders who are seeking more challenging literature. Shelley loves their excitement. She explained, “They have no idea Shakespeare is supposed to be hard, so they approach the material with enthusiasm and an open mind.” The program culminates with the students’ performance at the San Diego Shakespeare Festival in Balboa Park.
In addition to working directly with the kids, Shelley volunteers for many local organizations that serve the community’s children. She has served on multiple PTAs as her three sons have progressed through the district from Sunset Hills to Black Mountain Middle School and now to Mt. Carmel High School. She also represents the Boys’ Water Polo Club for the Mt. Carmel Athletic Foundation and is the president of Sundevil Competitive Basketball.
Shelley and her husband, Kris Gent, spend much of their free time watching and supporting their sons’ athletic pursuits. Evan, a junior at Mt. Carmel, plays water polo and swims. Nathaniel, a freshman at Mt. Carmel, wrestles and will try out for baseball this spring. Their youngest son, Cayden, a seventh grader at Black Mountain Middle School, is a three-sport athlete – competing on football, basketball, and lacrosse teams.
“I love that I get to work with kids in PQ every day – either at Sunset Hills library, through the PTSA programs at Mt. Carmel, or on the basketball courts throughout PQ – building relationships and making connections not only to help make kids more successful but to feel like PQ is the place where our family belongs.”
