Service Since the Mayflower
It is interesting to note that the Righthouse family – Bret, Susan, and 13-year-old daughter Sophia – are not only longtime residents of Rancho Peñasquitos but are longtime American residents too! Both sides actually descend from the Mayflower and possess deep historical ties to the United States military – family members have served in branches of the Army, Marines, and Air Force.
Bret and Susan have continued their families’ legacies of serving the community and the country in many ways. They’ve been with San Diego Law Enforcement for 31 and 28 years, respectively, and met each other through mutual friends during their time in training. In addition to serving the community through law enforcement, the family is passionate about volunteering with various organizations.
Both parents have been PTA members for nine years, serving terms as PTA president for Park Village Elementary School. Bret is the unit commander for the Miramar Young Marines Program (MYMP) and “works tirelessly on leadership skills for today’s youth,” noted Susan. She is the executive officer for the MYMP, and has also led Girl Scout Troop #8716 since Sophia was in kindergarten. In addition, she serves as service unit manager for the Canyon Crest section of PQ Girl Scouts, managing 41 troops, 355 active Girl Scouts, and over 200 registered adult volunteers.
Sophia also plays a big role in the community. She is a Young Marine Gunnery Sergeant in the MYMP, with leadership over 57 youth in her unit, and is interested in serving her country as an officer after attending either Annapolis Naval Academy or a University Navy/Marine Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). Sophia also began a program called Valuing Our Veterans in which she raises money within the community to place 20-foot American flags and service flags in the yards of veterans (with no cost to the veterans). She is a ballet dancer and dances competitively in jazz, tap, and lyrical.
The Righthouse family loves 92129 because of its close proximity to work and city activities. But when they’re not enjoying the San Diego lifestyle, they like riding dirt bikes and quads on Colorado trails and taking road trips to see historic landmarks. Wherever they roam, the Righthouse family is getting and giving the most out of life.
