The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Poway-Peñasquitos branch sponsored seven local middle school girls who attended Tech Trek at University of California San Diego in July. Evelyn Kim and Cassandra Nguyen (Mesa Verde); Anjoli Bose and Ekene Okolo (Black Mountain); and Ashley Perez, Kalee Johnstone, and Yesenia Cruz (Meadowbrook) spent a week living on the college campus and participating in hands-on activities in STEM fields. Participants were divided into groups, who studied a core subject in the morning – math, chemistry, marine biology, anatomy, forensics, coding, or robotics. Afternoons were spent in labs and on field trips. Evening activities ranged from science labs and demonstrations to a college prep workshop to yoga and swimming.

Tech Trek is a one-week academic residential science and math camp designed to develop interest, excitement, and self-confidence in middle school girls. Learn more at www.aauw-techtrek.org.
