Peñasquitos Christian Preschool Offers Developmentally Appropriate Early Childhood Education
Peñasquitos Christian Preschool (PCP) has long been a fixture in the community. Established in 1985 by Peñasquitos Lutheran Church as an outreach ministry to the families and children of the community, PCP has continued to thrive and remains well-known for its outstanding early childhood education programs. The school is proud to have been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) since 1987 and maintains that accreditation today. NAEYC’s accreditation system sets professional standards of quality for early childhood education programs and helps families identify high-quality programs for their young children.
PCP offers a variety of developmentally appropriate programs for children of diverse backgrounds ranging in age from 18 months to five years old, which focus on play-based, child-centered learning. “We see each child as a unique individual entitled to discover God’s world at his or her own developmental level,” said Preschool Director Andrea Petsche. “We emphasize active learning, which takes advantage of children’s natural motivations, abilities, and interests. Our children are given endless opportunities to investigate, solve problems, discover relationships, and make comparisons.”
Children have access to a dedicated STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) lab called the Nature Hut, an expansion of PCP’s Outdoor Classroom, where they are encouraged to explore and engage with the world. Children are also guided in their spiritual development through weekly chapel, where they sing, pray, and learn stories from the Bible. Afternoon enrichment classes are available for certain age groups, and the preschool calendar is filled with fun special days throughout the school year, such as Wacky Days, Farm Days, Stone Soup Feast, and Transportation Derby.
At the core of its child-centered philosophy, PCP has small class sizes – between 12 to 20 students – and low teacher-student ratios – between 1:6 and 1:10. There are two fully qualified teachers in every classroom, as well as a specialized teacher for the Nature Hut two days per week. “We are inspired by the blessing and gift that children bring to our lives as they discover who God created them to be,” Andrea shared. “We relish and are motivated by their love, passion, and curiosity.”
