Local Students Named National Merit Scholars
Six Poway Unified School District (PUSD) students were recently awarded 2018 National Merit Scholarships by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Winners included Westview High School students Allison Bao, Steven Chen, Andre Yin, and Kevin Yu, and Rancho Bernardo High School students Samuel Hunter and Robert Ozturk. They are among 29 Merit Scholars throughout San Diego County and 2,500 Merit Scholars nationwide, chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists.
The winners were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, and were judged based on their academic record, test scores, activities, leadership, and personal essay, as well as information about the school’s curricula, grading system, and written recommendation. Merit Scholars each received a $2,500 scholarship, which they can use at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university. For more information go to www.nationalmerit.org.
