Art and Education

Two Westview High School seniors, Haier (Heather) Yang and Cynthia (Cindy) Qiao, were awarded 2018 North County Society of Fine Arts (NCSFA) scholarships. They were chosen from nine applicants from five local high schools.

Heather’s goal is to become an art professor and teach in one of the top art and design schools. She will attend Pratt Institute in New York in the fall. Cindy’s career goal and lifetime ambition is to become a freelance artist and designer. She will be attending the Rhode Island School of Design. Both Heather and Cindy demonstrated to the scholarship committee a passion for art and an element of social awareness for the current times as expressed through their artwork. In addition to their scholarships, both winners received a one-day art exhibit at the Rancho Bernardo Library.

NCSFA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the appreciation and education of fine art in the community. NCSFA offers demonstrations and critiques by accomplished artists every year, as well as informal critiques, paint-outs, juried shows, member exhibits, workshops, and art field trips. Each year since 1996, NCSFA awards scholarships to deserving Poway Unified School District graduating high school seniors who intend to pursue a career in fine art as they continue their education.
