BMMS Team Succeeds in Worldwide Competition
Odyssey of the Mind
Black Mountain Middle School’s Odyssey of the Mind team brought home third place in the World Finals at Iowa State University in May after taking first place in both the regional and state competitions earlier this year. The team of seventh and eighth grade girls, which included Sydney Hubbard, Brianna Vargas, Casey Good, Annabelle Reyes-Pangilinan, Bryanne Reyes-Pangilinan, Rumi Chadwick, and Katie Jacques, created a “mockumentary” that retold a scene from The Hobbit from the character’s point of view. They were given an extensive list of requirements for their performance and a budget of just $125. Over 850 teams competed in the World Finals, with 64 teams in BMMS’ problem category and middle school division. The girls participated in an Olympics-style opening ceremony, stayed in the campus dorms, and met other students from all over the world.
Founded in 1978, Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving program that challenges students to go beyond conventional thinking, allowing their knowledge and ideas to come to life in an exciting, productive environment. Past Odyssey challenges include things like designing mechanical dinosaurs, inventing new factory machinery, building working vehicles, writing a new chapter to Moby Dick, putting a twist on classic artwork, and much more. Students build self-confidence, develop life skills, create new friendships, and are able to recognize and explore their true potential. For more information go to www.odysseyofthemind.com.
