Since its founding in 1998, Diamond Gateway Women’s Organization (DGWO) has provided a warm welcome for North County women. The close-knit community meets in Rancho Peñasquitos for community service, educational speakers, and a chance to meet and connect with new and lifelong friends. Read along to learn more from DGWO President Nora Nido.
Q&A with Nora Nido President
How has the club grown and evolved over the years?
The organization has invited friends and published announcements inviting women of all ages in the community to meetings. It has evolved into meetings with a variety of programs such as guest speakers on current events and topics covering everything from health to being a private investigator or hall of fame songwriter. Others included authors, theater performers, musicians, or dancers.
Refreshments are also provided at meetings. Additionally, members have formed groups for bunco, dominoes, bridge, crafting, gardening, a “lunch bunch,” and occasionally attending plays or movies.

Profession: Realtor, RE/MAX United, Scripps Ranch

How did you personally become involved with DGWO?
A client invited me to a meeting in 2015! Everyone was so nice and I enjoyed it so much I kept going! Early members were new to the area and saw announcements about meetings or were invited by members.
What is your current role within the organization?
Current president. I hold monthly board meetings, but since I work full time and I’m involved with other clubs, I’m lucky to have board members that help with membership, programs, and new ideas to increase fundraising for nonprofits at our annual spring luncheon. We all do what we can, when we can, and it always works out.
What is the most rewarding thing about your role? The most challenging?
To be part of an organization that is collectively kind and fun while giving so much back to their community is really cool and inspiring. The only challenge is in getting new members to replace members that move away. We know we have to pioneer a better online presence to make it easier for people to find us!
“To be part of an organization that is collectively kind and fun while giving so much back to their community is really cool and inspiring.”
What are the primary goals of DGWO?
To provide a place for women to socialize, while raising funds for local nonprofits.
Can you tell us about this spring’s upcoming luncheon?
Diamond Gateway is hosting a garden party for our 20th anniversary! The event is Saturday, March 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Carmel Mountain Ranch Estate. Festivities include a fashion show, floral hat contest, and silent auction. There are usually at least 60 beautiful baskets in the silent auction, which include restaurant gift certificates, events, crafts, and themes. We also have a wine pull, and opportunity drawings as well as door prizes. Tickets include lunch, dessert, and favors.
For tickets please contact Dael Kiesler at firstname.lastname@example.org or 619-252-0804.
Where will the luncheon’s proceeds go?
Friends and Family Community Connection, Operation America Cares, and Honor Flight. We also sponsor a family at Christmas.
Is DGWO involved in any other philanthropic efforts?
San Diego Food Bank, and packing boxes for America Cares.
What communities do you serve, and what’s the most rewarding part of working with those communities?
Rancho Peñasquitos, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, and Scripps Ranch. There are families in need at any given time in every community, and Friends and Family Community Connection serves North County, so we can make an impact in our own neighborhoods.

Are there any other recent projects or events that you’d like to elaborate on for our readers?
One of our members is married to a WWII vet, which is how we got involved with Honor Flight. On Veterans Day last fall, we went to the fall meet at Del Mar and had a race named DGWO for Honor Flight, in honor of the work we do for them. Great day at the track!
How would somebody go about joining DGWO?
Any women interested in joining can contact our membership chair, Roxie Stalter, at 858-538-8842.
When and where does the club meet? How does a typical meeting go?
Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at Church of the Nazarene, 10060 Carmel Mountain Rd., San Diego, CA 92129, at 7 p.m. A typical meeting would start with introduction of guests, then scheduled program, refreshments break, meeting, and raffle.
Our February speaker will be a travel expert speaking on the topic of travel tips and deals, and everyone in attendance will get a travel voucher. There is no meeting in March since we just focus on the spring luncheon that month.
