Poway Unified School District was recently named San Diego County’s California Exemplary District awardee for 2019, recognizing the district’s positive culture and emphasis on student and family engagement. “Poway Unified School District’s effort to increase student engagement and to support the needs of transgender and non-binary students stood out, as did their partnership with the Anti-Defamation League,” said Dr. Paul Gothold, San Diego County Superintendent of Schools. “It is clear Poway Unified is building better, more responsive educational environments so your students succeed and thrive.”

The district was also commended for its participation in the Sandy Hook Promise’s Start With Hello program, the convening of its first Safety Planning Committee, and the creation of the X-ploration program to ensure equitable access to physical education, STEM, and visual and performing arts curriculum for elementary students.

Individual schools have also won recent awards, with Meadowbrook Middle School and Mt. Carmel High School honored as 2019 California Distinguished Schools by the California Department of Education. Criteria for this recognition includes test scores and graduation rates.
