Books for Change
Mt. Carmel High School student Margo Kapp has a love of reading, something she feels passionate about sharing with others, especially children. Margo established Books for Change, a club that is part of a larger nonprofit organization with the goal of exposing children to literature. “Books for Change is about giving children access to books to help foster a love of reading. We want this love of reading to remain strong throughout their lives, allowing for successful development and a bright future,” revealed Margo. In order to achieve this goal, Books for Change collects books that are donated to schools throughout the San Diego community, as well as Spanish-language books that are donated to specific locations in Mexico.
Margo’s most successful book drive resulted in the donation of more than 600 books by Mt. Carmel students. According to Margo, the most challenging part of leading Books for Change so far has been organizing the book drive and dealing with the logistics of book collection. She was unsure how many books to expect, and the results were better than she ever could have imagined. “The most rewarding part of the project was helping kids who may otherwise not have access to books,” Margo stated. She established Books for Change on her own, an achievement she is proud of and that led her to being named a Sundevil Standout. “This award means a lot to me because I was recognized for being a student who treats people with kindness, works hard, and exemplifies the ‘Sundevil Way,’” she explained.
